Trauma leaves you feeling unsafe in your body, emotions, thoughts, and relationships. Healing trauma requires a collaborative relationship that restores a sense of safety, empowerment, and justice. This becomes a model for healthy relationships and provides:
Grounding in the here and now helps when you feel unsafe, overwhelmed, numb, or foggy.
It helps you separate the past from the present, recognize whether the present is safe enough, and see the choices/resources available to you. Take your time with each step. Notice how you feel before you start and what’s changed when you finish. If this exercise gets too uncomfortable, stop and talk to a therapist.
Recall what year it is, how old you are, and where you are now. Describe where you are now using each of your five senses.
Focus on the sensations of your feet against the ground. Push your feet into the ground. Scrunch your toes.
Take deep slow breaths, pausing between inhaling and exhaling. Gently tense your muscles as you fully expand your chest and belly. Then let your muscles relax as you gently release all the air.
Remind yourself of the ways that the present is safer than the past and of the resources you have now that you didn’t have then.

Being honest with yourself is not always easy, so it can be hard to share with your therapist too. When trust and comfort exist, honesty can surface.
